Central Austin Neighborhoods

Austin offers a diverse range of neighborhoods from trendy to suburban to downtown lofts.   That's one of the things that most Austinites love about our city, just drive a mile or so down the road and you'll experience something different!

Austin has limited public transportation, so if you need to use public transportation, you will find yourself looking in the Central Austin area where Capital Metro offers more frequent service.

Tarrytown, Enfield, Hyde Park, Clarksville, Bryer Woods, Travis Heights and SoCo are some of the older, more established, and often offer some of the more"prestigiious" addresses.  Homes in these areas have the charm and architecture of years past intermingled with infill new construction to add a more eclectic feeling.   A prime benefit of living in these areas is their proximity to downtown Austin and all of it's amenities and employers including many hospitals and medical facilities, plus downtown hi-rise employers.

Tarrytown is considered to be one of the more prestigious addresses and homes here are generally in the $500K and up range.   Located just minutes to the west of downtown Austin, it is a very convenient location.

Nearby is Enfield, which offers homes from the smallest cottages to the largest mansions priced in the millions.   This eclectic mix provdes a diverse and charming centrally located area in which to live.

Just north of downtown and the University of Texas Campus is Hyde Park.   Younger families find this area attractive due to it's many parks, proximity to Central Market, and it's stunning tree-lined streets.   Homes in this area are generally above $300K.

Historic Clarksville is located to the west of downtown Austin, just east of Mopac (Loop 1), and bounded by 6th Street, 10th Street, West Lynn and Waterston.   This compact area features restaurants, art galleries and neighborhood shopping.

"SoCo", or South Congress, is probably one of the hottest areas in Austin right now.   It's a vibrant, artsy, creative area which has seen a great deal of renovation over the last several years.   St. Edwards University is found here, too.
Don't miss First Thursday which is a regular feature in the area which occurs on the first Thursday of each month where stores in the South Congress neighborhood stay open until 10pm and offer music and other activities for the evening.   The shopping here could be described as retro or trendy in many instances and is home to many galleries & restaurants.   Many homes are being purchased here for renovation or are being torn down to make way for small condo or townhouse projects.

The 1930's brought the Bryker Woods neighborhood to Central Austin and homes are generally "cottage style".  Located just east of Mopac near 35th Street, it is known for it's tree lined streets and many parks.

Travis Heights is another popular in-town neighborhood on the southern edge of downtown Austin.   Many homes are being renovated but still exude charm and quaint details abound.   A convenient location is a stong selling feature to this locale.

The Central Austin area is gradually spreading outwards too, as more close-in areas become popular.
